The Lie She Wears

A daughter inherits her mother’s deadly secrets in a chilling novel of psychological suspense by Elle Marr, the #1 Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Alone Time.
Museum curator Pearl Davis always had a strained relationship with her mother, Sally. Growing up, she rarely felt her mother’s love. So many things about her mother’s behavior never added up. But when Sally dies unexpectedly, she leaves Pearl a letter from the grave…confessing to murder.
Suddenly, Pearl has even more questions than she has answers. She suspects the letter is just a sign of her mother’s diminished state of mind―until she finds human remains in Sally’s garden. With the help of a friend, Pearl begins searching for the truth of her mother’s actions―and as she does, more cryptic notes emerge. But these letters aren’t just clues behind a confession. They’re a warning. Sally was terrified of something.
When more remains are discovered, it’s clear whatever secrets Sally died with are now Pearl’s to bear. And as darkness closes in, Pearl fears that her mother’s past could be the death of her.

My Thoughts on The Lie She Wears
Elle Marr understands how to write suspense. She burst on the scene in 2020 with her debut The Missing Sister, now she’s releasing her seventh novel just a few short years later, with her skills even higher and her prose honed by several previous books.
The Lie She Wears perfectly threads a parent with cognitive decline with family secrets and a woman trying to find her place in the world. Pearl discovers her mother’s shocking secrets after her death, exploring how little we often know about the truth of another person’s life. We often think of our parents as springing to life during the years that we remember, forgetting they had entire lives, often including years as adults, before we come on the scene.
As with much good domestic suspense, the narrator often feels unreliable, as do the other characters, no one is being totally honest. Even when we read the chapters in the killer’s POV, their identity is deftly hidden, providing us background and insights, without giving that final secret away.
Marr’s choice to make the lead character Pearl an art curator was an excellent addition. She’s not an artist, but a lover of art. Someone who lives outside the turmoil and complications of an artist’s life, but who recognizes talent and does her best to support that art in her own community—echoing Marr’s own love of art museums.
Portland is also a great location to set her latest thriller, from the details of the museum to the other locations around town. Marr also uses dual time lines to great effect, ticking all the boxes for an exciting read.
It’s easy to see why Marr’s novels chart as #1 bestsellers on Amazon. If you are a fan of twisty plots, characters acting badly, tense scenes, and the complexities of familial ties, this is the book for you.
